Part 2 -- How To Add A Chat
Forum To Any Website By James Martell Those who read the first installment of this article may recall that I wanted a chat forum installed on my kit car site. However, at the time of it's publication, I was awaiting some important customization html and graphics from one of my web design guys, Vaughan Davidson of KillerCovers.com out of New Zealand. Have a look at the screen shot below. There you'll see how Vaughan masterfully modified the default colors and graphics that came with the free open source supplier I chose, phpBB.com.
But now that it's out of the way I can make the needed improvements to my own "super site" so that it continues to grow as a "destination" site. From its inception I felt that my many visitors -- 15,000 unique visitors a month at last count -- would really enjoy interacting with other kit car enthusiasts around the world. And soon they can. (in the third part to this series I will describe the finals steps to take before it goes live) Now, not only does this benefit them but I gain an immediate upside benefit as well. You see, every new thread created by a member generates a fresh page of content, which in turn displays appropriate ads automatically through the Google AdSense program. Once the interface is fully functioning (see next issue), I can finish it up with a good moderator to ensure that people play by the rules. This too, is easier than you think.
I'm going over the bids now. And I have a lot to choose from. Most are people like myself -- who work from home and have an interest in kit cars. I'm not sure what bid I'll choose yet, but I'll make my choice based of how well they communicate with me in addition to their fee. I expect I'll award a contract that pays about $200-$300 a month, since it's really just a part time endeavor. Probably the person working for me will have multiple contracts going and is doing quite well, especially if they live in a country where the value of the U.S. dollar is high and the local cost of living is low. In later editions I'll keep you posted on how it's going. All the best,
