The Family Pets -- Never a Dull
Moment When Scamper & Lilly are
Around By Arlene Martell In our first issue James introduced you to our family, Adam, Justin, Shelby and Victoria. In this article I'd like to introduce you to our family pets, Scamper and Lilly.
He's a big fluffy orange tabby cat. This adorable companion is 8 years old and just loves to lay on my desk and stretch himself across on my papers while I type. He's got the laziest, most laid back temperament I've ever seen in a cat. He sleeps on Shelby's bed all day and finally around 4 o'clock in the afternoon, comes to eat then lay on my desk. He even jumps on to James' desk for a little affection, often while James is giving a class or recording - just to be a pest. He loves affection. He gives "head butts" when he wants to be petted and won't leave you alone if he wants attention.
When James gave his first lecture at CJU's annual training in 2004 the packed hall cracked up with laughter when James flashed the above picture of scamp and me at my desk. Scamper knows whenever I am planning a trip and will lay on my suitcase and try to get in it. I also have his picture on my cell phone. Having family pets nearby while working is another often overlooked benefit of working from home. I just love it! Now Lilly, our Sheltie dog, is another story.
But Lilly is no fool. She quickly became a favorite around here, not only with the kids, but with James as well. Lilly doesn't mind Scamp and tries every trick in the book to eat Scampers food, but Scamp finds Lilly annoying. Her 6 week stay has become two years. And it looks as though she's not going anywhere any time soon. In fact, as if she is aware of our original intent of keeping her only six weeks, she follows me everywhere and won't let me out of her site. It's like she's begging me not to give her away. Even if I am gone for an hour, I am greeted like I'm the most important person in the world. When I go away for a week, she goes crazy with excitement when I return. It's funny to see James play with the dog by clapping his hands because Lilly will immediately start spinning and barking until he stops. Hilarious! All the best,

We found Scamper back in
November of 2000 in a local
newspaper ad. It was love at
first sight. He came
bouncing out from under a
table to greet us.
In fact, if there's a camera
around, look out. He'll
start immediately preening
and posing as if he knows
his image is on the line.
For many years she belonged
to Jamie's mom. However, the
home where she now stays
due to a regrettable illness
refuses animals, so we
agreed to take her for 6
weeks until we could find
her a good home.
