Moving To White Rock Was The Best Move We Ever Made

By Arlene Martell

Hi everyone. Arlene here.

It's funny how you never really know how life will go.

I was thinking of how well the kids are doing these days. And what a great community White Rock has been for the kid's teen years.

Adam has a great social network of friends and counselors. Justin has just been promoted at his job. Shelby has two jobs and goes to college part time. And our youngest, Victoria, who is only 13 holds down her own job at a restaurant and keeps getting promoted to tasks with more responsibility.

It was the year 2000 and we had to make a decision.

We were living in Abbotsford at the time. Jamie had just gotten started with Affiliate Programs and I wanted to move.

Abbotsford is a nice place. It's a bedroom community 90 minutes from Vancouver in an area we locals call "the valley"...short for Lower Fraser Valley, extending inland towards "the interior", another colloquialism for the B.C. interior. (Rockies to most)

Anyway, even though it's only a 30 minute drive from Abbotsford to White Rock, I always found Abbotsford is much hotter in the summer and colder in the winter.

The entire social scene in White Rock is entirely more upscale than Abbotsford, which is essentially a rural area -- a fact your nostrils will tell you when spring arrives and they start fertilizing the fields with manure.

On the other hand White Rock is right on the ocean. I just love those cool ocean breezes!

And strangely enough, although we lived in Abbotsford and were quite happy, we always found ourselves heading to the White Rock beach for fish and chips, often spending the day there since our friend Daryl had lived in White Rock for many years.

And White Rock has lots of local restaurants, which we love. It's just so much fun to eat out and stroll the beach or pier afterwards. The people here seem happier.

It was during one of our visits to White Rock, that Jamie asked, "why don't we live here?"

Now, although I liked the idea and wanted to move I still had reservations about uprooting the kids. Adam at the time was 11, Justin 10, Shelby 8, Victoria 3.

And they hated the idea! The oldest ones thought it was the worst idea ever! They lobbied heavily against it.

But we moved anyway.

And looking back I'm so glad we did, not only for the restaurants and clean ocean air, but for the fact that our kids have thrived here.

Now they are all teenagers or young adults.

And each have active social lives with ton's of friends who often hang out at our house.

And both girls work in restaurants we like to patronize. So that's always fun to visit them at work.

As Jamie says in our video, "best move ever"!!

All the best,
