Owning A High Ranking Website Is Easier Than You Think

By James Martell

In this article I want to give readers a feel for what's involved in publishing a website. I know that many of you have no background or training in this area. And because of that you may be thinking it's "rocket science", which of course it isn't.

And I would know because I started out life as a carpenter.

But when I got going online in 1999 there was precious little training. In fact, the only resource I could find at the time, other than my friend Shawn Bouchard's personal coaching, was an eBook by a Medical doctor from Quebec who had great success marketing a penny stock investment software product.

I know that may sound strange, but it's true.

At that time Ken Evoy, M.D. was the most credible teacher available. And through his ideas, coupled with Shawn's input -- plus a whole lot of trial and error -- I quickly figured it out.

And I'll also say this. I'm still figuring it out, for there is no end to the need to staying up to date and current. Things are always changing because the Internet is always evolving.

But, once the basics are understood, it gets easier and easier to stay on top of things.

For the total newbie let me share some of the basic concept of "building profitable websites".

First thing to know is that the reason we can make money online -- even without our own product or service is that as "affiliates" we earn money through sales sent from our website to a merchants website -- where hopefully a sale is made.

But how do they know if that visitor came from your site?

Good question. That was my first question too.

And the answer is easy if you understand know how browsers work.

Most people using the Internet use a browser. In the old days the dominant browser was Netscape. Now it's Microsoft Explorer which gets bundled with most PCs sold these days.

Another popular browser is Mozilla which can be set as the default browser if you don't like Explorer. (free online) Then there are the Macs which use their own browser called Safari.

But regardless of what browser you use, these browsers enable you to surf the web.

Now imagine you are on a website about credit cards. And let's say there are several links within the web page about these credit cards that take you to another site (most probably the merchants site or vendors site).

I'm sure you've done this. You reading something online that has a blue colored text link (hyperlink) or display ad that once clicked may open another website.

Well, when clicking one of these links some tracking code is automatically stored by your browser. It's a piece of code called a "cookie" (short for cookie crumbs, it leaves a trail).

Now let's say you've found an application for a new credit card on the page that you just opened. And that you applied right then and there and within a few days were approved.

Let's say the original site was an "affiliate" site, in other words they published information about credits cards and offered links to various vendors who could take your application.

In that scenario the "cookie", which was set on your browser after clicking the link (ad or text) would contain tracking information with your personalized "affiliate ID" allowing the "merchant", in this case a credit card company, to identify which affiliate site sent in the customer.

It's really a very elegant and high tech form of referral marketing. Something only made possible by this relatively new thing called the Internet.

And this new and robust form of marketing in now possible because of the convergence of three trends: (in my opinion)

  1. consumer confidence with online shopping

  2. widespread use of high speed Internet

  3. merchants (vendors) need to sell online to lower costs

Online shopping has been growing at enormous rates, hardly slowing down even during this downturn in the economy. In fact, it's a trend that sees no end in site.

So if you want to make money online and you're not a vendor (merchant) with products to sell or have the site functionality to take orders (shopping cart), -- then an easy way to get started is to publish an informational site about a topic of interest and then join an affiliate program selling relevant products.

Say you have an interest in comic books.

Well you could write about the subject on you own website. Then join an affiliate program of interest to comic book enthusiasts. Once you place some ads on your site your in business.

Then whenever one of your readers clicks an ad or text link on your site after which they then buy from your merchant you get paid.

And because "cookies" are set to last as much as a year, the consumer who returns and buys is still identified as your customer because of the cookie set in his or her browser.

And if you have a popular comic book site with many pages listed high in the Google search results you get paid more, due to higher traffic. (getting free traffic at Google is one of my specialties, by the way. Also, not nearly as hard as one would think if you do it right)

NOTE: see what shows up on a Google search for "comic book affiliate programs". You may be surprised at how huge the industry is.

Of course, all of the above requires some training.

And frankly that's what I do. I've been training people to succeed with affiliate programs since 2001. And recently I launched my best training yet, -- a 26-week online tutorial called the SUPER BootCamp.

Details here: www.martell-newsletter.com/super-bootcamp-announcement.html

But in a nutshell here's what you do.

  1. decide on a topic

  2. find a good merchant or two paying good commissions

  3. choose one of several online publishing tools geared to various skill levels from expert web designer to total Internet newbie.

  4. arrange hosting (cheaper than you think, as low as $6.95/mo)

  5. design your site and fill it with excellent content. (write content yourself or contract out to thousands of professional writers who bid for the job -- as low as $10 an article/page) www.elance.com

  6. upload you site to your server (hosting company)

  7. arrange back links to your site from trusted authority sites (my proprietary and original PAD technique has had unprecedented success doing this and is a key to gaining FREE traffic from the search engines, especially Google)

  8. maintain your site by analyzing stats, adding fresh content and ensuring your links are up to date.

Of course, you can always do more, such as adding audio or video...offer a newsletter to visitors...or even set up a chat forum.

Although these functions are not necessary I teach them in the SUPER BootCamp because they just add so much more value for your visitor.

And the search engines, which rank your site, will take note with their amazingly intelligent algorithms.

I know it still may sound confusing if you have never thought much about websites, much less about owning one.

But don't you think you owe it to yourself to at least give it a try?

Online publishing has been the business model that turned my financial life around. And I just wish you could make it work for you, too.

That's why I'm letting everyone test drive the new course for a full four weeks before paying a cent. You'll never know unless you try.
