Arlene Shares 8 Break-ation Planning Tips

By Arlene Martell

Every Mother's Day is special to me for two reasons. Of course each year I love the attention and appreciation I get from my own kids, but it is also time I get to spend with my own mom, sister and sister-in-law, all who live a distance away. Each one of us have busy lives and families and one weekend in May, we take time to getaway together and renew our relationships. This is a perfect example of a breakation James and I talk about.

A breakation is simply a short getaway planned for every 6 to 8 weeks. Even 2 or 3 days away will renew your energy, clear your head and get you back to work with a new attitude. Believe it or not, we get more done because of these trips. When you know you are going to be away for a few days, you have the tendency to compress time frames and finish off lingering projects before you head out the door. Then you return to work refreshed and energized to take on the next project.

I thought I would share a bit about some past mom and daughter breakations and tell you about the one coming up in a few weeks. Each year we decide on a new location - sometimes near and sometimes far. One of the things I enjoy the most about our trips is actually getting these three ladies to travel. Before we started this tradition, none of them spent any time exploring new places. I guess because I get to travel often, I know what they are missing and want to show them some great places, and have them experience more of the world. I also insist we stay in at least 4 star hotels so they get a taste of the good life! I know how to get the deals to make it affordable for everyone so I book the rooms!

A couple of years ago I took them all to Las Vegas, which was totally beyond their expectations. Having been there so many times, it was easy to play tour guide and we had a blast. We went to shows, spent time shopping, went to Freemont experience, toured the hotels and went on a gondola ride through the Venetian. They all loved it.

Last year we went to a little town in Washington State called La Conner known for it's cool shops and acres of tulips. We stayed in a beautiful B&B and had so much fun shopping, walking through the town and relaxing in the hot tub. This trip was the opposite of the action packed Vegas trip.

This year we are boarding a B.C. Ferry and heading for Victoria - B.C.'s capital city on beautiful Vancouver Island. Now it is a mystery to me how my sister could live in B.C. almost her entire life and never have visited this gorgeous city. So this was the destination of choice. We are heading out at the end of May. We decided on several places to visit including Craigdarroch castle, Butchart Gardens, Miniature World and other tourist spots along the harbor. We are booked to take a horse and carriage ride tour through the city. One thing for sure, we will be treating mom to high tea at the Empress Hotel - a tradition of this grand city dating back to the 1700's.

As years go by, these days will be long remembered as quality time spent together where we put our lives on hold for a few days to reunite and share stories of our lives and families together.

8 Breakation Planning Tips:

  1. Check out VRBO.com (vacation rentals by owner). You can find some great places to stay - tucked away cottages and good deals on accommodations.

  2. Subscribe to a few travel sites. They will email you specials. I like Hotwire and Airfare Watchdog

  3. Become a tourist in your own city - stay in a B&B and explore

  4. Go with your spouse, or go with a family member or pick a close friend

  5. Book a room with a fridge so you can bring your own drinks and make a light meal

  6. I find the best deals on hotels through PriceLine.com and HotWire.com

  7. Don't try and plan every minute of your day. Ask the locals the best place to eat and places to explore. We have done this many, many times and found some really cool things - like a waterfall in the middle of the rainforest.

  8. Take your video camera and digital camera and do a scrapbook of your trip.

It does not have to take a lot of planning, or a lot of money to go on a breakation. You can plan something close to home and find a fun place to visit you have not been to before. Whatever you decide to do - mark the date on your calendar and have a great time!

All the best,
