Returned, from the Affiliate Summit, Revitalized and Ready to Hit the Ground Running. Don’t Miss the Next One!

By James Martell

What a wonderful and exciting event! It was incredible to see the growth of our industry from the very first Affiliate Summit cruise we went on in 2004 with 220 people to the 2010 Affiliate Summit West in Las Vegas last week with over 4,000 people. Arlene and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this event and encourage all of you who have never attended an Affiliate Summit Conference, or who missed this one to make plans for the 2010 East Summit in NYC August 15-17.

So, wow, where to start. I’m going to try and give you some of the highlights for what we thought was the best conference yet. We were so impressed with the organizational work that went into this meeting that all came together in extremely high fashion and style. There so many events to choose from you were always wishing you were two people so that you could go to two things at once. Just a quick list of the session:

Arlene and I arrived in Las Vegas a day early because we knew that we would be helpless to the normal sleep patterns because of the activities that would go on around us, so we tried to lay back and get ready for the next day’s events. As I alluded to earlier, there were over 4,000 people at this marvellous conference and they all seemed to be at the opening event, the Meet Market. This was Sunday and picture a room full of over 200 tables where merchants and companies set up their booths and people could walk around from table to table getting ideas from merchants, really meet people and chat one on one. We actually had a booth this year for the first time and it was wonderful! We had people stopping by all day long. We had a chance to let them know us and what we were about. The Meet Market has turned out to be the most popular gathering of the entire summit. The room was just abuzz. Really a great kick-off event.

Sunday night is always a choice of activities and this year we went to the ShareASale Party. It was a blast as usual. They had decorated the room with the Vegas theme. The room was divided up into different areas to choose from. They had some video car racing where people could race against each other. They had a large section set up with Wii and people were bowling and playing tennis. They actually had a bounce castle and there were lots of people in there bouncing around. In one area way in the back of the room was set up with gaming tables. They would issue you some chips and then guide you along the way if you didn’t know how to gamble. Black Jack was very popular, in fact, I had been all over the room looking for Arlene and found her playing Black Jack and WINNING, she was about $600 ahead and was smiling from ear to ear. She didn’t even mind when she had to give the chips back at the end of the night.

We actually got to sleep relatively early Sunday night, because again, historically we were in for a late night on Monday night.

Bright and early Monday morning was the keynote speaker Dr. Robert Cialdini. Author of “Influence” and in the field of influence and persuasion, Dr. Cialdini is the most cited living social psychologist in the world today. Catch a snippet of him speaking at the summit on YouTube. He was amazing to listen to. He has worked with many Fortune 500 companies and teaches people the principals of influence. He discussed how you could be using a tried and true technique in your advertising efforts and tweak it just a little bit for much greater results. Such great tips for new affiliates and for us old ones who have been around for awhile. If you have not read his book “Influence”, buy it and read it. You’ll refer to it over and over again.

We had the Platinum Passes, which include breakfast and lunches. We really enjoyed our time at lunch. They had a very smart set up where there were several long tables of buffet and then the rest of the sit down tables were round and held up to a dozen people. We really took advantage of that and had many of our friends and previous Boot Camp members and former students of the Handbook with us at lunch. Great networking and catching up time.

Then there was the Exhibit Hall – 134 different booths. The caliber of these booths has improved over the years and it was awesome. Of course the Exhibitors wanted you to see their products but there was no high selling pressure in the room, just a chance to chat with the merchants.

Later on in the afternoon, Arlene and I took a long walk @ the Miracle Mile Mall and also took in a show. A must, if you are in Vegas. I had seen this show before but had no problem seeing it again, as this was my favorite band. A tribute to the Beatles! The show was great! The Fab Four. They did a wonderful job of creating perfect sound alike and did so many of everyone’s favorite Beatle hits. They even were introduced by “Ed Sullivan”.

On Monday night, Arlene had orchestrated dinner with some more of our Boot Camp people and we had dinner at the  Le Provencal Café in Paris Hotel. We did this same thing last year and it worked so well, that we just did it again. Although you were inside, the deco suggested that you were outside sitting under the stars at a Parisian Café in France.

Left to Right: Alok Sawhney, Kirk and LaRea Rasmussen, Suzie and Chris Molnar, Arlene and James Martell,
Dan Maynard, Phil Watkins, John and Shakira McNamara, Don Conner, David Cunningham, Don Campbell and
Randy the photographer. Not shown.

As you can see by the photo above a good time was had by all.

The Affiliate Summit 2010 was the best Summit so far that we have been to and it just keeps getting better and better. The hardest part is dividing your time for the actual educational breakouts, the networking with old and new friends, and getting some, yes, some, sleep. Monday night, I did manage to get to bed around 3:00 a.m. Arlene had been there long before me and was well rested on Tuesday. It was worth it!
